 12 years have passed since the last issue of MEDICAL CORPS INTERNATIONAL has been published. To many of you, the journal will be familiar as the forum for global medical corps. MCI was the only journal aimed at medical captains and officers to be published on an international scale. Furthermore, it is considered to be the leading authority in the field of medical services for accidents and natural disasters. Then and now, the journal provides a unique and global forum for doctors, pharmacists and scientists from medical corps and disaster control organizations to exchange their views and experiences.
Not only due to the current situation of global politics and the fact that we have to be prepared for future natural disasters, but also since MEDICAL CORPS INTERNATIONAL has never been forgotten – we are regularly receiving inquiries from all over the world as to a new edition – did we decide in mid-2004 to re-edit the journal. At that time, the first issue was scheduled to appear at the end of 2005.
Now, we are forced to react to the current situation at an earlier point in time. The seaquake of 26 December 2004 off the coast of Sumatra and the tsunami triggered off subsequently resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in the history of mankind.
The disaster has made it clear to us that we cannot wait until the end of the year with publishing the first issue as scheduled; instead we have to engage right now with what has become one of the greatest disasters in the history of humankind. We would like to do justice to this disaster with a special issue of the “new MCI” scheduled for publication in June.
Perhaps we may be able to contribute our small share to ensuring that such devastating disasters will inform future practices – starting from prevention to sensible, well-coordinated and efficient aid to the persons concerned.

 12 Jahre ist es mittlerweile her, dass die letzte Ausgabe der MEDICAL CORPS INTERNATIONAL (MCI) erschienen ist. Viele von Ihnen werden Sie noch kennen als das Forum weltweiter Sanitätsdienste. Die MCI war die einzige international vertriebene Fachzeitschrift für Stabs- und Militärärzte. Das Magazin galt darüber hinaus als weltweit führende Autorität im Bereich der Unfall- und Katastrophenmedizin. Das Magazin bietet Ärzten, Apothekern und Wissenschaftlern in medizinischen Hilfsdiensten und Organisationen des Katastrophenschutzes ein einzigartiges, globales Forum zum Austausch von Meinungen und Erfahrungen - damals wie heute.
Nicht nur aufgrund der weltpolitischen Lage und der Tatsache, dass wir auch in Zukunft mit Katastrophen rechnen müssen, sondern auch weil die MEDICAL CORPS INTERNATIONAL nie in Vergessenheit geraten ist und wir bis heute noch regelmäßig Anfragen aus der ganzen Welt nach einer Neuauflage bekommen, haben wir uns Mitte 2004 entschieden, sie wieder aufzulegen. Geplant war seinerzeit die erste Ausgabe für Ende 2005.
Nun sind wir gefordert, der aktuellen Entwicklung bereits früher Rechnung zu tragen. Das Seebeben des 26. Dezember 2004 vor der Küste Sumatras und der davon ausgelöste Tsunami haben zu einer der größten Naturkatastrophen der Menschheit geführt. Es hat uns auf schreckliche Weise wieder vor Augen geführt, wie wichtig eine funktionierende, koordinierte und kompetente Hilfe – auch und gerade länderübergreifend – für die Betroffenen ist. Es hat uns gezeigt, dass dem Militär und insbesondere den Sanitätsdiensten eine ganz besondere Bedeutung zukommt.
Vielleicht können wir mit der MCI einen kleinen bescheidenen Teil dazu beitragen, aus Katastrophen dieses Ausmaßes für die Zukunft zu lernen – von der Prävention bis hin zur sinnvollen, koordinierten und effizienten Hilfe für die Betroffenen.
